SUMMARY:[Seminar] Navigating Hostility: How LGBTQ+ interest groups strategize in hostile contexts in the EU
DESCRIPTION:EUGENDERING / EUNMUTE SEMINAR \nPresenter: Bastiaan Redert (University of Antwerp) – Navigating Hostility: How LGBTQ+ interest groups strategize in hostile contexts in the EU \nDiscussion: Cecilia Rizcallah (UCLouvain Saint-Louis Bruxelles) & Samuel Defacqz (UCLouvain) \nAbstract \nEqual rights for LGBTQ+ individuals are increasingly contested across Europe\, threatening the well-being of millions. In this context\, LGBTQ+ organizations play a vital role\, not only in advocating for equality policies but also in providing essential community services such as healthcare\, safe spaces\, and suicide prevention. Despite their importance\, research on these organizations remains limited\, especially regarding how their strategies and structures adapt to diverse national contexts. In a recently funded project\, Bastiaan Redert bridges this gap by examining how national political environments influence the organization and strategies of LGBTQ+ interest groups in Europe. Using a combination of survey data and unique datasets\, it explores how these groups navigate political and community-oriented roles. During this seminar\, the project will be introduced\, and some key findings will be presented and discussed. First\, findings of preliminary studies show that in repressive contexts organizations focus shifts from political advocacy to community support. Second\, in another study Bastiaan finds that when elite opinion is supportive towards LGBTQ+ equality\, organizations favor insider strategies. Yet\, in hostile settings\, they often face barriers to political engagement and do not become more active in their communities. These findings suggest that hostile political contexts further silences already marginalized voices. \nLink to registration

SUMMARY:[Seminar] Queer in the Trenches : LGBTQ+ Rights\, Gender\, and European Values in Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom
DESCRIPTION:[Seminar] EUGENDERING & IRSEM-Europe \nWith: Maryna Shevtsova\, Senior Postdoctoral Fellow at KU Leuven and Ph.D. in Political Science from Humboldt University\, Berlin\, specializes in LGBTQ rights\, queer migration\, and anti-gender movements in Central and Eastern Europe &  Sophie Jacquot\, Professor at UCLouvain Saint-Louis Bruxelles\, who holds the Jean Monnet Chair EUGENDERING. \nDiscussant: Florian Opillard\, researcher at IRSEM. \nAbstract: The ongoing Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has not only reshaped geopolitical alliances but also catalyzed profound societal transformations\, particularly in the domains of gender\, sexuality\, and human rights. This event explores the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals serving in the Ukrainian military\, a historically masculinized institution undergoing significant change amidst the full-scale invasion by Russia. It examines the interplay between the Europeanization of human rights in Ukraine\, the legalization of same-sex partnerships\, and the broader “war of values” framing the conflict. It addresses the challenges and opportunities for advancing LGBTQ+ rights within the context of war\, including transnational cooperation\, alliances with EU partners\, and the role of civil society in fostering inclusion.  This conversation aims to bring together activists\, policymakers\, and scholars to reflect on the need for inclusive debate and strategic collaboration\, situating Ukraine’s struggle for LGBTQ+ rights within the larger framework of European integration and human dignity. \nPlease note that seating for this event is limited. \nSandwiches will be offered. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: 27th February 2025\, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm (including a 20-minute lunch break from 12:00 PM to 12:20 PM)\n\n\nWhere: IRSEM-Europe\, Rue de Namur 73\, 1000\, Brussels\n\n\n\nTo register\, please fill out this form.
