The Myth of Europa: Towards a Feminist Political Philosophy of Europe

This teaching material provides some tools to analyse the myth of Europa from a feminist perspective. It is suited for students in European studies with a theoretical appetite and can provide a good starting point for discussions on the concept of ‘Europe’ more broadly (politics, justice, violence, colonialism). This teaching material is suited for bachelor and master’s students.

Key themes and movements of the analysis: RAPT (the abduction of Europe, tearing away from one’s homeland)– RAPE (violence, sexual difference) – CHILDBIRTH (the founding of civilisations, the beginning of politics and justice in Greece).

This tendency in EU legitimacy-building can be explored in class through the case of gender mainstreaming.
